The project will run three years and will be coordinated by H. R. Pasindu, professor at the Department of Civil Engineering. He says:

The collaborative project between the University of Moratuwa and our international partners through KARSIP represents a vital step toward addressing road safety challenges in Sri Lanka and the region. This three-year project aims to establish a centre of excellence that empowers local experts to address Sri Lankan challenges with world-class research, proving that sustainable safety infrastructure begins with shared knowledge and strong institutional foundations.

Timeline and expected results

The project aims at creating a self-sustaining centre of excellence that provides continuous policy support to Sri Lanka’s transport sector.

The project will run for three years:

  • During the first year, the institutional setup is developed and relevant stakeholders are engaged.
  • Simultaneously, a detailed research program, facilities, staffing and budget for the following two years are planned.
  • The research program of the excellence centre will focus on locally relevant road safety challenges, aligning with the Safe System approach.
